FITSPIRATION MONDAY: Safe Snacking

Consistent exercise and dieting are the key ingredients in the fight towards weight-loss, yet contrary to popular belief, opting for just one of these won't achieve results. I know - I've tried.

Today I'll be talking about snacking, something I think we're all pretty familiar with. How many times a day do we find ourselves sifting through the cupboard/fridge until we can find something sweet or savoury or totalling triple digits on the calorie count to satisfy our snacking hunger? For me, I'm a total chocoholic; particularly at this post-Christmas time of the year where we've a ready abundance of chocolate just waiting to be eaten.

That being said, last week, I completely rebooted the kitchen snacking system; I did an enormous detox throw out of all the junk food sneaking around, and bought only the items I felt would aid in my reaching my goals.

On the Go:

  • Almonds (Essential fats and a whole lot of protein for a tiny nut)
  • Peaches (Antioxidants - think clear skin)
  • Bananas (High in potassium)
  • Berries (Antioxidants, again)
  • Blueberries (Superfood)
  • Greek yogurt (Calcium, no added sugar, natural bacteria: Mix two table spoons of Greek yogurt with one table spoon of a yummy yogurt, alternatively, use Splenda or Stevia to naturally sweeten the taste)
  • Celery (No sugar, full of water to hydrate)
  • Carrots (Make you see in the dark...Just kidding! Improved vision and reduces the risk of cancer)
  • Cucumber (Water rich, cure for hangovers, reduces the risk of cancer, aids in digestion)
  • Cashews (Low unsaturated fat, low GI, reduce risk of heart disease)
  • Dark chocolate square (No added sugar, lower blood pressure, increases brain blood flow)
  • Dried apricots, cranberries, apples, mango (with no added sugar)
  • Acai berries (antioxidants, amino acids, essential fatty acids)
Light and Easy:
  • Banana and chocolate powder Protein Shake (2 minutes)
  • Celery and peanut butter (1 minute)
  • Avocado, cottage cheese, diced tomato on a rye Cruskit x 2 (4 minutes)
  • Tuna on a rye Cruskit x 2 (2 minutes)
  • Kale, apple carrot grape juice (5 minutes) - as seen on Shutterbean - life changer
  • Coconut water (can buy from a local vendor)
  • Hard boiled egg (3 minutes)
  • Berry salad (5 minutes - add greek yogurt and honey on top for a super healthy, delicious snack)
  • Protein pancakes (10 minutes)
  • Frozen yogurt covered fruit (freeze overnight for a light and easy morning snack)
  • Frozen berry, greek yogurt, banana smoothie (5 minutes)
  • Vegetable and cheese omelet (3 minutes)

♡ FITSPIRATION: The Band-Wagon Story ♡

Uh oh... Guess what happened.

I fell off the exercise bandwagon. Yup. It's bad.

Today I plucked up the courage to go out and go for a run around the beach with my friend at about noon, and maybe only fifteen minutes into the run was I spluttering and panting and going crazy and that's when it hit me that I hadn't done any consistent exercise for a good two...(maybe two and a half) months (I told you it was bad), and only the odd set of push ups every other night as an alibi.

Pleease don't judge me, we've all been there!

As of today, I'm going to re-boot my system, detox of all the feeling sorry and guilty about myself, and start over.

Maybe the reason why I fell off the band wagon was merely because I had fallen into the habit of doing precisely what I'm about to show you...

     ♡ EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES
It's a universal truth that making up an excuse is always sososososo much easier than actually doing something, and I hands-down guarantee that I've done this before. Procrastinating is one of my talents.

However, like most problems in life, there are always hidden solutions, and exercise is just one of those.
- Don't have time? Wake up earlier, go to bed earlier. Hard? Hell yes. Worth it? Hell yes.
- Don't have a gym? Unless you live in a plane or under the sea, I'm sure that outside of that front door, there is an explorable mass of land of which you can run for kilometers. If there's not, then where do you live?
- Don't know how to start? You don't know until you try, AND you don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. Throw out all the junk food, smaller plates means smaller portion sizes, easy youtube tutorials and workshops and books.

♡ FEELING SORRY FOR ONE'S SELF DOESN'T DO ANYTHING
It's natural. Really. I promise. But does it get us anywhere.......hardly....

Dust off your crown, Princess, sh!t happens and we just need to get over it! Refresh with the sun coming up tomorrow. Promise yourself. Make sticky notes of encouragement as stick them somewhere you can see them and start off slow...which leads to my next point...

Need motivation?

- Check out Lorna Jane's Move Nourish Believe blog. It's fabulous.
- I've been reading Lauren Conrad's blog and it covers pretty much every aspect of girly life, including a specific segment directly related to fitness. It's also fabulous

♡ THE "I'm going to wake up tomorrow at five and do a spin-class" MOTTO
I think it's fair to say we've all made this mistake.

Pretty much the number one rule of exercise and fitness to start off slow and then build up to it. Rome wasn't built in a day, honey, and believe me, you won't be doing yourself any favours by going all out on the first day.

If anything, there's maybe an 80% chance that this won't play the way you want it to, and only puts your body and mind under stress.

Not only does this lead to physical problems such as shin splints (you know that nasty ligament pain on the outer side of your calf that you can't stretch), Achilles rips (just above the back of your heel) and other bodily pains such as knees, respiratory and back, but over-exercising also leads to negative psychological consequences such as "that was awful, I'm never doing that again" which will only discourage you further.

How To: KICK SOME SERIOUS BUTT

ICED WATER BOOSTS METABOLISM ;)

Well hello lovely friends!

At the start of this year, it is accustomed in my family to always make a list of new year's resolutions, of things to sort of aim to achieve within the year. As usual, I started my list off (And if you want to see the post, click here) with the usual "be kinder, be gracious, be elegant..." all that kind of stuff, and by the end of the list. "loose a tad of weight"

After all, what is a new year's resolution without it, eh?

But seriously, they are new year's resolutions. Who actually follows through with them? You say.

This year, probably one of my main resolutions was to follow through with my resolutions.

I've never been particularly sporty...in other words, you know that kid that always manages to somehow get a ball to the head, or fall over when they're just standing still...well, that was me. And it still is.

So, I've decided to take matters into my own hands by aiming to go to the gym at least three times a week, and for about four months (at the start of the year), this went so well. I felt so much more confident with the way I looked, and I felt like a better person.

Doing this was possibly the best thing I'd ever begun to do, so today, I'm going to kind of make a post explaining how I achieved this.

***I am by no means a nutritionist, personal trainer or expert in any field of fitness, I am merely a teenager who is aiming to get healthy. :) ***

STEP NUMBER ONE: Cut the emotional dreaming crap.
I was used to spending nights sitting up in my bed until two a.m. literally whining about my body, my fitness, all that kind of stuff. I would complain and be depressing and everyone else would be all "Shut up, Lucy". And by the time the new year rolled so slowly around when it kind of hit me that I was never, ever going to tone up or lose weight if all I did was sit in bed complaining. And my Mum then came in an gave me a huge lecture about it.

It's good to dream, but you're never going to get somewhere unless you take action into your own hands.

And with that, I literally decided that I would turn my life around (HALLELUJAH). It is a bit of a crude wake-up call, but in all seriousness, it is quite true.

STEP NUMBER TWO: Cut the calorie crap.

Yummy

I'm not a diet analyst or anything of the sort, but of course if one were to be eating high calorie, fat, carb foods, then naturally, one would put on some.

One needs to have a good ratio between eating healthily and exercising, and my mum told me (and this is the part where I'm not sure about) that 60% of a health/fitness kick comes from cutting down on unhealthy foods. Having said that, exercise is totally important, especially if, like me, you want to tone up a bit more.

I'd highly recommend looking up at blogs for quick and easy to make foods, of which are all very healthy and go on websites like:

http://pickyeaterblog.com/

http://www.foodnetwork.com/

http://www.veggiesandme.com/

http://wolfandwillowblog.com

On the topic of food, it's so important NOT TO CUT MEALS!!!!DDDDOOOO NOOOTTT CUT OUT ON MEALS!

I know my teenage friends think that cutting breakfast and going on an empty stomach is the highway for skinniness, but it is so not.  Here are the reasons why:

1. Cutting meals slows your metabolism (slower metabolism means it takes a longer time to lose weight)

2. Oh my god, you will be so hungry!!! I can't go more than about two hours without sustenance.

3. While you may get off for about a week or two of not eating specific meals, in the long term, it encourages binge eating not a week later, consuming a high amount of calories in a short time span

4. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it enforces concentration and focus in the brain. If you are going to have a big meal, have it at breakfast, that way you can burn it off over the day naturally.

STEP NUMBER THREE: Get Motivated
I always find that the hardest part of getting into motivation is..... getting into my gym gear, though once I'm in my gear, I'm determined to do a good work out. For me, should I be totally slap-on-the-couch unmotivated (as I was about a month ago), I go out and buy some fabulous gym gear from shops like Lorna Jane, Lululemon, Victoria's Secret, etc.

This not only gives me an excuse to shop, but also motivates me to actually work and exercise in something comfortable and lovely at the same time.

Saw this, thought it was cool.

STEP NUMBER FOUR: Make Time

One doesn't find time to work out, one makes time.

As you know, I am still in school and that takes up a huge amount of time - schooling, co-curricular, homework, test prep, assignments, friends, and other things. Last year, I used to get up at five to go to the gym before school, but who on Earth was I kidding? I was absolutely shizzled after about a month of that.

Now, I go after school between about four to seven depending on what I have on that day.

Before finding out what times I could go, I wrote up a plan of which days I had to do what, and when I could slot in a work-out.

I've been ill for the past week, however, I still exercised even though today  I only went for half-an-hour. Putting in to perspective, doing something is better than doing nothing.

If you can't go to the gym, do those fabulous little 30 day ab workouts or conduct home workouts like Pilates, yoga or running around the block with the dog.

The Perks of Outside Exercise

STEP NUMBER FIVE: Stick With It!!!!!
The second hardest part (which ties in with motivation), is to stick with it. Once you're in it for about a month, you get this feeling when you begin to crave exercise and being healthy. Because I have been sick, this has been the worst part of it all because its this gut feeling when I could have done something, and I haven't.

I go to the gym with my mum and it's so much better than going alone. Grab a pal and hit the gym or go for a run and then go for a smoothie afterwards. I feel so much more motivated to exercise when I have a friend to exercise with! It passes the time so much quicker, and it keeps you going in the long-term, setting you into a habit.

In a nutshell, the year will go on whether one does exercise or not, but in the long run (<~~~ hehehe punny right there), how and where do you want to see yourself when next year rolls around.

I know where I want to see myself.

Haul: Victoria's Secret, Kérastase, Lorna Jane, and Red Hair

Hello, hello!

It's been a week, it's raining still, and I'm listening to Martha Wainwright whilst typing up a fabulous wittle haul for anyone who is interested! I'm so happy to say that the amount of views I got on my last post was so cool and it's shot up so much which is très fantastique!!

So I've had these little beauties for a while now and I just hadn't really bought anything else of which I could do a combo haul into so I guess I just haven't...until now! After buying the Pure Seduction, I was really curious to find out what the other scents consisted of as I really loved Pure Seduction. I don't know why, but I was kind of expecting something really spectacular as I did my prior research into the scents I wanted and came across these two. When them came in the mail, I was really pumped and maybe got a little too over-enthused as when I tried them out, I didn't really like them at first glance as they were a bit strong, but I do admit that as I've gone along, I've definitely grown to looove them!

Amber Romance literally sums up Autumn in a scent. It's so calming. Just imagine a hot fire, autumn leaves and a cup of Vanilla tea, and that's literally what Amber Romance smells like. I love wearing it to bed as well because its very delicate and soft and placid. If one were to put it on, I wouldn't suggest spraying it directly on the body, but spraying it into the air and walking through it, that way you get the perfect combination between overpoweringly strong, and too little.

I also got Strawberries and Champagne because I'm having a sixteenth in about a month and I needed something girly and nighttime funzies. You know what I mean. I love strawberries and well...champagne is nice ;) overall the scent is fun and just perfect for a girls night out. Its also really nice for a Saturday morning after a run out to the gym and a hot shower, and then a spray of refreshing Strawberries and Champagne.

Overall, I find S and C more eau de toilette and if layered, Amber Romance can become more of an eau de parfum as layering brings out more of a musk to it.

If you follow my twitter, @luceindia , you would be aware that I got my hair done today too! YAY! I went radical and red and surprisingly, it looks really good. My stylist Sarah did an absolutely flawless job as seen above, though I hasten to add that it looks way better in real life as the camera I used has saturated the colour a tad. It's not that red, though more of a mahogany which is good as I'm going into winter!

Sarah has given me some handy tips and tricks of the trade (though I used to be a hairdresser part time...didn't work out). She used this heat protectant leave in conditioner which worked really well at protecting my hair from drying out a lot, as well as minimising frizz-factor and etc. It works as a dual protector and hydrator which is precisely useful for anyone who blow-dries their hair on a regular basis.

I've been using a Toni and Guy heat protector for a while now (a spray) and I've just found that it doesn't work at all. I spray my hair with generous amounts and it doesn't work, so personally, I've found this to be a bit of a rip off for the name. Quite disappointing considering Toni and Guy is quite expensive, and the product fails to live up to what it declares.

I have yet to open this cream from Kerastase, but I'm very much looking forward to it!

Sarah also gave me a little sample of this serum of which she also used on my hair, though I was hesitant to buy as it's Moroccan Oil and if you've followed up with my posts, you'll know I've recently done some purchasing of Argan Oil. She used this on my hair and to be honest, I found it worked really well. With the combination of the leave in conditioner above, it left my hair vibrant, shiny and frizz-less (YAY!)

It also aided in giving my hair a really healthy glow, which I love, because it has been looking quite dull due to a lot of heat and a certain failing heat protectant (cough, Toni and Guy, cough), and with it, I've been sent quite a few compliments on my hair which makes me grin ear to ear every time! :D

Well...I bought some flowers, and this is a haul post! Beautiful colour, delicate and smells like love. I love flowers. I think it's the little things in life that matter most. Like flowers and red autumn leaves and music.

Last, but not least, I did a cheeky little bit of shopping in Lorna Jane again because I'm obsessed and I found this really nice, loose fitting pink singlet. The fabric is so nice because it's loose so I don't feel like I'm going to suffocate, and it's thin so my skin can breathe a bit. I actually can't find it on the website which is a bummer, but I got a really good deal of a bra and a tank for $100 which is very handy indeed!

Anyway,

Hope you enjoyed my little mixed haul! Have a lovely week, and hopefully I'll be able to post another time over the long weekend as I'm going to the city with a chum tomorrow! YAY!

Haul: Victoria's Secret, Lorna Jane, Glassons & Dotti

Hi everybody!

Gosh, it's been about two weeks since I last posted which is really, really bad for the readership and everything else, but in all honesty, I have spent these two weeks in New Zealand (without internet!! YAY!) which is quite crazy and it's been wonderfully magical. If you haven't been to New Zealand...I can't even...it's the most magical place I have ever possibly been in my life; from Hobbiton (The actual set where Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit was filmed - it's so beautiful, just out of Auckland) to ice-climbing, to Queenstown (jet skiing, relaxing by a picturesque lake, and white water rafting) to star gazing at 2 in the morning, it was all in all amazing.

But, aside from the amazing touristing around New Zealand, I did find myself wandering some shops (mostly in Queenstown), and I did buy some stuff here and there so I thought I'd do a little haul for everybody who is interested!

As you probably know if you have ever travelled internationally, at the airport, there is a shopping area which consists of duty and tax free buys, so naturally, this is just kind of a spider's web for me. Because in Sydney city, we don't have Victoria's Secret, but yet at the airport, we do, I popped into the old lingerie shop and did a bit of snooping, buying some undergarments which I won't post on the website because I think it may be a tad awkward if I do. I also bought a phone case for my iPhone which I got at Christmas (my world is just finally upgrading itself in the technological world hah!).

I actually bought another phone case off a shop on Etsy but it never arrived (which fluffed my feathers a fair bit), so I sent a bit of an obstinate and slightly ill-mannered (ahem*) email to the seller about contracts and all that, and if they don't reply back, I'll be emailing Etsy...(ANYWAY!! Way off topic there!)

I got the case. It stood out to me because I wanted something quite girly, but not too over the top extremely superficial girly. I thought the stripes were quite pleasant, as well as quite minimalist. The other case had an Eiffel tower and some other crazy knickknacks on it. Though expensive, I'm expecting this to be good quality and to last a fair while.

Next was Lorna Jane (which I actually bought several weeks ago in Sydney, so not part of the whole NZ thing but anyhow). I bought this very snazzy backless gym top. If you've seen my New Year's resolutions, of course one of the goals would be to lose that smidge of weight so I thought I'd go hard core and buy a jogging elliptical top to do my intense workouts in.

I love the blue. I think it's such a beautiful and fresh and also quite summery colour. The material is fabulous as it's quite thin, elastic and would be very easy to wash and quick to dry. I love the design on the back as well. The open back gives it that little bit of sexy-happy-to-be-wearing-this kind of feeling.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is either my clumsiness to mix the blue with the whites and turn all my whites turquoise (this happened the other week! Eugh...). Because it is such an intense and bright blue colour, I'm a bit nervous about washing it firstly because like I said before, I don't want to colour to drain onto other garments, and secondly, because I think (like jeans), the colour will fade.

I also bought another one, but I don't have it with me at the moment thus, I couldn't get a picture of it, but the second one is a closed back, more loose and baggy bright fluorescent pink. (Just something happy to be working out in!)

I came across this very neat little coloured nail polish from BYS cosmetics. It's almost a gold colour, with flakes of silver; very interesting. I love the nail polishes (I know OPI do some good ones) where it starts off one colour and then changes according to the light; so, in the dark, the polish is a very silvery colour, but then in a brighter atmosphere, it's almost gold. It's very cool indeed.

Whilst in Queenstown, I visited Glassons and got a snazzy pair of socks there. I love frills. There's something about the frills that just make me very happy and almost classy I suppose haha. The only thing about the socks is the colour. It's a burgundy colour and the frill is black so I'm actually not too sure what I can piece this with, but we'll see how it goes. I got these for about five dollars (something like that).

Also at Glassons, I found this very pretty, mauve coloured collar shirt. As you know, I'm quite fond of my collared shirts, and the detail around the bodice and the neck was very pretty - it almost has a feel for a soft and cute country style (which is very me, indeed!). I reminds me a bit of my grandparents' house!

This was a bargain for about 7 dollars. It does crease fairly easy (as it's silk) so that just means a bit of extra tender loving care towards it, but I'm cool with that! It's fairly long so I suppose one could wear it tucked into a skirt or pulled out over leggings. I actually wore it with the following pair of blue leggings and they looked quite pretty and summery!

Walking around Queenstown and peaking through the tourist souvenir shops, I came across a pair of socks. If you don't know NZ, then you wouldn't know that New Zealand is sheep-land! It is filled with thousands and thousands of sheep so these socks were a bit of a must have take home momento!

(P.s. going to speed this little rant up a bit because I fear I'm dragging on!)

We popped into a bit more of a department Myer kind of store and I got this candle. It smells like heaaaaven! It's a very Christmassy candle with cinnamon and roses and other homely scents that I quite like and it's in the shape of a very pretty rose with little golden glittery sparkles throughout the wax.

Lastly, we went into Dotti and immediately, my eye caught the leggings for 10 dollars. Because I'm a legging freak, (if you haven't realised that, then I'm doing something good), a pair of bright blue floral leggings made me very happy indeed. The colours are so bright, and it surprisingly works very well with the mauvey top above.

Pretty much, my only "con" would be that when I tried them on back at the apartment, the seams seem (heehee) to be splitting. I have no idea why they would be though, because the leggings are too big for me anyway so it's not as if my legs are bursting the edges of the leggings. They don't hug my skin so that I don't have any breathing space at all, so it tis a bit odd. Maybe it's just the quality? If so, I am a bit disappointed, especially coming from Dotti as I am a "regular" at that shop and in the past, I've been rather pleased with the quality of my garments

Anyway, I hope this is all okay for you and I hope you like what I've bought! I don't know when the next post will be (tis all a bit higgletipigglety as I've been in NZ and now I'm going away with some friends for the weekend), but tomorrow morning (Sydney time), I'll try to fit in maybe a 1930's fashion post to follow on with my 1920's one I did a few weeks back.

Hope your holidays are going well! School starts next Tuesday for me (EW!)

Xx
